The Ordinary “Buffet” Multi-Technology Peptide Serum / Review

It’s time for my second review from the Deciem series!

Now, the name of this product can be a little confusing at first. But, in fact, it suits it just right. The term perfectly represents all the variety of ways in which a serum can help in fighting those first signs of age. Yep! – This time I’m here with a review of The Ordinary “ Buffet “ Multi-Technology Peptide serum. So- let’s get started! 😊

As always,  I’ve divided this review into several sections :

Packaging

The packaging is pretty much the same as with their hyaluronic serum. You get 30 ml of product in a very sturdy muted glass bottle with a dropper. The cardboard box is also their standard matt white packaging, with the instructions in English & french. Again,  everything is simple, nothing fancy, which I like. The shelf life of the product is 12 months after opening.

About the product & the ingredients

In this case,  we have an anti-aging serum, rich in several peptide complexes. Now – What are actually peptides?

So,  peptides are chains of amino acids. Every peptide has a different combo of these acids. When you combine several polypeptides together,  you get a certain protein, and as you know, proteins are one of our skin’s essential components (everything comes back to amino acids pretty much).

Again,  I’ll try to describe this as simply as possible.

Think of your skin, like an old brick wall… With age and environmental changes,  the wall sooner or later starts to decay. First, you see some cracks and crannies, but as the years go by, the plaster starts to fall off, later on,  even a brick or two starts missing…The wall becomes weak and easy to tear down. So,  what do we do?  – We start to work on rebuilding the wall, fixing the plaster, replacing the missing and broken bricks. We try to restore its old appearance and strength, as much as possible. Now, you see here? These new bricks and plaster? – They’re made from our dear peptides. 😃

This serum contains 5 major peptide complexes: Syn-Ake, Matrixyl 3000, Matrixyl Synthe 6’, Argilerox, Relistase, and a probiotic peptide complex, combined with some hyaluronic acid and other amino acids. Like with my previous review, first, you’ll learn some interesting stuff about these peptide complexes. – So, let’s begin! 😊

Syn-Ake: This is a synthetic peptide that mimics the effect of Waglerin 1, a peptide found in the Temple Viper’s venom (a nasty little green snake from South-East Asia). Its main purpose is in the anti-aging field, targeting expression lines.

So,  what does it do? – Well, it actually works just like Botox. It reduces the contractions of our facial muscles (you could say they are partly paralyzed) so there is less cell movement. This way, present wrinkles are smoothed out and less noticeable, while it’s preventing new ones from appearing. This synthetic form of snake venom was developed by a Swiss pharmaceutical company called Pentapharm.

Argilerox – You could say she’s like a cousin of Syn-ake.- Why? It works pretty much by the same principles as Syn-ake, meaning it’s very similar to Botox. It also reduces muscle contractions in our face and is great in diminishing glabellar lines ( those frown wrinkles between our eyebrows) and crow’s feet (the lines around our eyes that appear when we smile). This compound is actually used in between Botox injections to prolong their effect, and It’s developed by a Spanish company called Lipotec.

Relistase – This stuff helps with skin tightness and elasticity. It reduces the work of elastase enzymes (that break down protein) in the connective tissue, to protect elastin, collagen, and other proteins in our skin. This is also developed by Lipotec, Spain.

Matrixyl 3000 – this is a peptide combo upgrade of regular Matrixyl. What this thing does, is that it stimulates the production of collagen, elastin, and hyaluronic acid in the skin (this is what plain Matrixyl does), plus it also reduces the production of interleukin 6 molecules (these little guys scream – Mayday! Mayday! We’re under attack! Shift to fight (inflammation ) mode against the intruder ! ). So in this way,  it reduces inflammation & skin matrix deterioration (in short, wrinkles and saggy skin – Goodbye !). This is developed by the Sederma company, France.

Matrixyl Synthe 6’ – this is a peptide combo that stimulates 6 major components of the skin matrix: Collagen I,  Collagen III, Collagen IV, Fibronectin,  Hyaluronic acid, and Laminin 5. In general,  it works in the department of skin repair. It helps in rebuilding the skin from the inside,  reducing the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines especially on the forehead and around our eyes (crow’s feet). Again, a trademark of Sederma,  France.

And to finish this chapter, we have the Probiotic complex – probiotic bacteria lysates are getting very popular in the skincare industry. It’s believed that they help with a lot of skin issues,  starting from acne, dermatitis, rosacea, to wrinkles. They can help the skin’s protective shield (a.k.a the Acid mantle) in fighting off bad bacteria, and also in adjusting its optimal pH level. Some claim they can help the skin regenerate its outer layer ( epidermis) more quickly and may help with the production of collagen. The mentioned ingredient comes from the Gram-positive bacteria called Lactococcus Lactis ( commonly used in the dairy industry for cheese and buttermilk, but in this case, you can get nice lactic acid for your skin).

So, what can we conclude from these ingredients?

They work together to reduce skin aging, helping you preserve firmer, plumped and less wrinkled skin.

Application and impressions

This serum is meant to be used morning and/or evening, just after cleansing ( so it will replace the toner or essence, in your skincare routine). It’s less runny than the hyaluronic acid serum, but also very lightweight. At first, it’s a little bit tacky as you apply it, but again, as with the previously mentioned serum,  that goes away as you massage it into the skin. There’s also no fragrance (although it has a slightly milky scent in the bottle,  probably from the probiotic) so it’s good for people who are sensitive to perfume. You don’t need a lot,  and the skin absorbs it really fast. One thing I love about it is that it gives a beautiful natural glow to the skin,  once it sinks in. I love it as a combo in the morning with the hyaluronic acid serum. Whenever I had this on my face, without any makeup on,  I would get compliments on how my skin looked so glowy and fresh. – I just love it for that! Now, I don’t have any deep wrinkles yet, but I do have some fine lines appearing on my forehead, especially in winter when my skin tends to be drier. I’ve noticed that they’re less noticeable since I started using this product. 😊

Do I recommend it?

Yep! Definitely go and check it out! Very mild and effective, again, suitable for all skin types. Now,  this is the most expensive product from The Ordinary line ( retails for 14, 80 € /1833 rsd), but in my opinion, it won’t break the bank (in comparison to some other serums with similar ingredients on the market). If you’re just starting out with anti-aging products and you’re on a budget, definitely try it out! 😊
